description The current crisis of the penitentiary system in Ecuador based on the massacres recorded in recent years has drawn the attention of several national and international organizations in the field of Human Rights. Despite this, the lack of efficacy in putting a stop to this violence by the State has led to the presumption that prisons have become a perfect “criminal ecosystem” for the proliferation of international organized crime. This research aims to demonstrate the contributing factors that have allowed the infrastructure of the Ecuadorian super-prisons the Ecuadorian prison system to become a dangerous ultra-violent criminal ecosystem. In this sense, through qualitative techniques of documentary, interviews, official statistics and journalistic investigative reports, the criminal dynamics of the Ecuadorian prison system will be analyzed from the year 2019-2021. It will be argued that through the new infrastructure, the onslaught of historical prison self-government, inefficiency in prison management, drug trafficking, and the new social dynamics of the prison system have become an ecosystem capable of reproducing organized. This complex scenario generates the need to have a comprehensive dimension of the problem facing Ecuador. It is therefore necessary to have a holistic and long-term sustainable vision in the intervention to alter these factors of benefit and criminal projection.

Universidad Politécnica Salesiana (Ecuador) 2022-09-27 info:eu-repo/semantics/article info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion application/pdf application/pdf application/zip text/html https://universitas.ups.edu.ec/index.php/universitas/article/view/6247 10.17163/uni.n37.2022.07 Universitas; No. 37 (2022): (September 2022-February 2023).
