Sumario:The history of the present and future prospects of the Colombian college market, although seemingly contradictory or redundant, facilitates understanding of the continuous changes that occur in an economic and social environment without taking into consideration time, national borders or specific locations. It also permits the logical construction of the future for the purpose of informed decision-making. The research focuses on the University in this context, since the relevance of its mission and the carrying out of its mandate, affect the quality of its participation in the larger society. Will it be a protagonist or a mere spectator subject to market forces that undermine its social function? The study covers the regulations in place today which will govern the future. In the so-called Knowledge Economy, higher education plays an important role since it is in the center of the new power dynamic. Knowledge becomes a commodity, making education and especially, university education, an integral part of a system of inflows and outflows corresponding to the laws of supply and demand that govern the market.
