Este artículo muestra el comportamiento de la productividad total de los factores (PTF) en el sector comercial de Popayán durante el periodo 2011 – 2012. Para ello se realiza una encuesta a través de un MAS, aplicada a empresas registradas en Cámara de Comercio del Cauca. A partir de una función de producción Cobb-Douglas, y estimando el capital de las empresas basándose en Lora (1994) y no en Harberger (1969), los resultados muestran que las microempresas que son responsables de la mayor inversión neta y de la mayoría de empleos generados al igual que las pequeñas empresas, presentan rendimientos constantes a escala. Las grandes y medianas empresas que muestran incrementos en la PTF durante el periodo, acusan rendimientos decrecientes.
