Este artículo analiza las estrategias implementadas por el Estado colombiano para fomentar la lectura en la región Caribe a través del programa de las Bibliotecas Aldeanas. También las colecciones bibliográficas que hicieron parte de estas bibliotecas y las representaciones que construyeron los lectores mediante los libros. Metodológicamente es un estudio de carácter histórico, basado en el análisis crítico de fuentes documentales como las correspondencias, los informes de los bibliotecarios, Revistas de la época, entre otras, que permitieron la construcción de los hechos investigados. Se concluye que los usos que se hicieron de las bibliotecas y sus colecciones incidieron en las formas de consumo y de participación, a la vez que estableció una relación activa y directa entre la comunidad y el Estado.
