Sumario: | This article discusses the strategies implemented by the Colombian State to promote reading in the Caribbean region through the Bibliotecas Aldeanas (Village Libraries) program. In addition, it examines the bibliographic collections that made part of these libraries and the representations readers created through the books. The methodology refers to a study of historical character, which is based on the critical analysis of documentary sources, such as correspondences, librarians' reports, the press, among others, which allowed the construction of the investigated facts. In conclusion, the uses made by these libraries and their collections influenced the forms of consumption and participation.
