Sumario:Background and objectives: This study show the fundamental guidelines considered in strategic planning for the Exploration and Exploitation business unit (BU) of the state-owned company Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales Bolivianos (YPFB). Methods: This study used qualitative methodologies such as semi-structured interviews, literature review and context analysis instruments. In this way, diagnostic mechanisms were established that shed light on firm performance and on its role at local and national spheres. Findings: Strategic planning and its proposal development emphasizes the prioritization of projects and resources to improve productivity and, at the same time, reduce the environmental impacts of this type of extractive industries. Conclusion: It is essential to draw up and implement relevant and sustainable strategic plans that optimize resources and ensure business performance and to monitor them effectively in order to facilitate the fulfilment of their objectives and their positive footprint in the economic and social fields.
