The results indicate that the first theoretical approaches are in the classical school and Keynesianism, leading to the types of frictional unemployment, structural and cyclical. Moreover, human capital theory has relevance in the analysis of unemployment, in some ways it determines the mobility of employees in jobs. The empirical analysis found unemployment relationship with sociodemographic factors, economic and institutional. Regarding the former, are age and socioeconomic status of the individual. With regard to economic policy are monetary and economic cycle, while the institutional labor reform has also influenced the behavior of unemployment.Key Words: Unemployment, Frictional Unemployment, Structural Unemployment, Cyclical Unemployment, Classical School, Keynesianism, Human Capital Theory. |

El desempleo es una problemática que tiene efectos importantes a nivel económico, social e inclusive familiar y personal. El presente artículo muestra los resultados de una revisión de literatura relacionada con aspectos históricos, teóricos y empíricos del desempleo. Los resultados indican que los primeros planteamientos teóricos se hallan en la escuela clásica y en el keynesianismo, conduciendo a los tipos de desempleo friccional, estructural y cíclico. Por otra parte, la teoría del capital humano tiene relevancia en el análisis del desempleo, pues determina en cierta forma la movilidad de empleados en puestos de trabajo. En el análisis empírico, se ha encontrado relación del desempleo con factores socio-demográficos, económicos e institucionales. Respecto al primero, se hallan la edad y estrato socioeconómico del individuo. En cuanto a lo económico se encuentran la política monetaria y el ciclo económico, mientras que en el ámbito institucional la reforma laboral también ha incidido en el comportamiento del desempleo.
