Sumario:Brazil and Mexico are pioneers in the design and implementation of conditional cash transfer programs in Latin America. This paper examines their experience in combating poverty, through the comparative analysis of Bolsa Familia in Brazil and Oportunidades (nowadays called Prospera) in Mexico. The evaluation of these programs is framed in the discussion on development strategies and is guided by the contributions of Latin American Structuralism, mainly from the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), and from some elements of the Marxist debate of the region. In this sense, the aim is to explain the role played by each of the programs mentioned in the fight against poverty and its incorporation into a broader national development strategy, with special attention to the political environment in which they were implemented.
