Sumario:The purpose of this research is to analyze social management as the foundation of sustainable development in the Venezuelan coal sector. The study is descriptive, non-experimental, and transectional. The population consisted of 20 managers working in Venezuelan coal companies. Findings suggest that coal companies do not identify a pattern of cultural and social values, which make them not to assume their social responsibility as an important element for the inclusion of the company into the social context, limiting their interaction with the environment, and clearly identify the social needs. This generates conflicting positions where individuals of the social context do not assume the company as part of their environment.
