Sumario:The present work exposes the relationship between depression and socioeconomic conditions such as gender, economic dependence determined by the source of income and academic preparation. It is shown that depression is not only something natural that comes with age nor is it a condition that occurs alone, rather it is largely determined by the context and conditions in which older people live. The study is a quantitative investigation in the El Mango and Ejido Benito Juárez communities of Macuspana, Tabasco. 57 older adults participated in the research. The Jerome A. Yesavage and Brink 30-item test was used to assess depression, and the Folstein mini-mental test was used to assess the patients’ cognitive status. The results allowed us to observe that there is a higher prevalence of depression among women, widowers, those who depend economically on relatives and those with a lower educational level.
