This article only presents the different positions of authors related to aging, families, institutionalization and forms of violence; regulations on the rights of older persons at the global and national levels; and the different institutions that currently work with this sector of the population at the national level. In other words, the aim of this article is to show and discuss some of the studies related to abuse and violence and their possible relationship with the coercive institutionalization of the elderly De acuerdo con Guevara (2016), la institucionalización de personas mayores se entiende como la práctica que implica el ingreso a un espacio de cuidado donde profesionales de la salud, del área psicosocial, u otras personas particulares, se encargan de la atención y cuidado de las personas mayores, que por su condición económica, ausencia o descuido familiar, estado de salud, vulneración de derechos, etc., han ingresado a este tipo de residencias, generándose impactos y modificaciones en su cotidianidad. El presente estudio se deriva de una investigación más amplia (tesis de maestría) en la cual se tiene como objetivo conocer las causas de la institucionalización coercitiva en personas mayores del municipio de Monterrey, desde una perspectiva de Derechos Humanos. En este artículo solo se presentan las diferentes posturas de autores relacionadas con el envejecimiento, familias, institucionalización y formas de violencia; la normativa sobre derechos de personas mayores a nivel global y nacional; y las diferentes instituciones que actualmente trabajan con este sector de la población a nivel nacional. Es decir, el objetivo de este artículo es mostrar y discutir algunos de los estudios relacionados con maltrato y la violencia y su posible relación con la institucionalización coercitiva de las personas mayores.
