Sumario:According to Guevara (2016), the institutionalization of older persons is understood as the practice that implies the entry into a care space where health professionals, the psychosocial area, or other private people, are responsible for caring and attention of elderly, who due to their economic condition, absence or family neglect, state of health, violation of rights, etc., have entered this type of residences, gene rating impacts and modifications in their daily lives. The present study corresponds to a broader research (master’s thesis) in which it is aimed to know the causes of coercive institutionalization in older people in the municipality of Monterrey, from a Human Rights perspective. This article only presents the different positions of authors related to aging, families, institutionalization and forms of violence; regulations on the rights of older persons at the global and national levels; and the different institutions that currently work with this sector of the population at the national level. In other words, the aim of this article is to show and discuss some of the studies related to abuse and violence and their possible relationship with the coercive institutionalization of the elderly
