Este artículo pretende examinar el proceso de expansión de escuelas públicas en el departamento del Cauca en los primeros años de vida republicana. La idea es comprobar cómo, aún en medio de la crisis económica y la devastación dejada por las guerras de Independencia, se aunaron esfuerzos con miras a implantar el proyecto de instalación de escuelas bajo el convencimiento de que estas instituciones educativas eran claves para entronizar los principios republicanos, consolidar la Patria libre y asegurar las bases del progreso social y económico. Aún por encima de todas las dificultades, vale reconocer el impacto de este proyecto educativo por cuanto allanaría el camino hacia la formación de una sociedad más democrática y letrada, con mayores posibilidades de ascenso social.
