Sumario: | This article aims to examine the process of expansion of public schools in the department of Cauca in the early years of republican life. The idea is to see how, even amid the economic crisis and the devastation of the wars of Independence, efforts were joined in order to implement the project to install public schools under the belief that these educational institutions were key to enthrone republican principles, consolidate free country and secure the foundation of social and economic progress. Still above all the difficulties, it recognize the impact of this educational project in the formation of a more democratic and legal society with greater possibilities for social advancement.
