Sumario: | The following paper aims at drawing attention to the role the university plays through its different fundamental functions of teaching, research, and extension or social outreach as practical tools for participation when education is assumed as a strategy of change. From theory, organization, practice and political struggle, such strategy can lead to the achievement of utopias of a social group. These, understood as the satisfaction of needs and the attainment of aspirations, can be achieved by taking advantage of natural and cultural resources. It also entails the challenge of facing contradictions among antagonistic social classes resulting from a dominant economic system- one that violates human rights such as the right to differ or perhaps one of the most determining rights: the right to dream of a different reality.
