description Development and sustainability, as elements that underpin human evolution, are closely related to the cumulative processes of change that are generated in society. In order to have a broader understanding of the evolutions of human society, we must necessarily address social innovations. These refer to values related to inclusion, quality of life and well-being, surpassing economic and business development. So, it is worth asking: How does social innovation and new conceptions of knowledge contribute to the development of human groups and sustainability for the future? To answer this question, a bibliographic review was used, by consulting scientific databases, and then constructing a conceptual framework that allowed obtaining a coherent answer. The result was a model for understanding the role of social capital in the absorption capacity of the social innovation process. With this model, it was concluded that social networks transmit information that is translated into an interpretation of the innovation policies that make up social capital. Therefore, social innovation processes become means of knowledge management that guarantee future sustainability.
