description Reading is a vitally important learning process since it stimulates a person’s knowledge and develops their intellectual capacity. For these reasons, this study aimed to conduct a diagnostic assessment of reading interest in first grade students through the application of two observational instruments, interviews and workshops. This methodology allowed us to understand the students’ reading interest and the ways their teachers stimulate this interest in reading. Following review of the data, this qualitative research study concluded that first grade students show disinterest towards reading activities, rejecting reading and demonstrating low academic performance in all subject areas. This low reading interest may be caused by the lack of pedagogical strategies implemented by the students’ teachers to encourage reading. These conclusions provided the basis for subsequent research questions: How do students generate an interest in reading? What strategies are most effective at engaging students in reading? How are healthy reading habits developed in students?
