description This article aims to clarify the Waorani “status” of isolated indigenous groups that still inhabit the Ecuadorian Amazon and, fundamentally, that of those called Taromenani. For this, the study focuses on the ontological-identity understanding of the “contacted” Waorani. From this, an attempt to demonstrate the existence of a double conception of “waoranicity” is made, which, in the author’s opinion, explains why, for themselves, these isolated people are and are not, at the same time, Waorani. Thus, an identity condition is built around interfamily alliances based on subjective survival interests which, in turn, find an objective reflection in the establishment of kinship ties. On the other hand, taking into account the transformations and attachments owing to the approach of the western world, in parallel to the previous perception, a purely ontological one operates by establishing a differentiation between being Waorani and being non-Waorani (cowori), which, in turn, finds its main explanation in the presence of a restricted, shared and empathetic emotionality that, in the Wao thinking, acts as a border between being and not being, belonging or not belonging.
