description This article examines the state and nation-building process in Southeast Ecuador (in what is now the Morona-Santiago province) during the first half of the XXth century. This territory – which was originally settled by the Achuar and Shuar peoples- remained in dispute between Ecuador and Peru since the day Ecuador became an independent country in 1830, and until 1998, when the two nations reached a final agreement on their common borders. Given the fledgling condition of the Ecuadorian state in the period under study, the information that can be obtained from bureaucratic and official sources is scanty. Thus, a different approach to data gathering had to be undertaken. It is argued that in those remote frontier territories, the Salesian missionaries became the actual and real proxy of the central government as well as of other external powers: the House of Don Bosco and the Vatican. Specific attention is given to the ways in which authority is endowed with meaning as a result of the efforts of actors to make sense of affections and disaffections, hopes, emotions, violence, disappointments and fear, which are to be seen as the founding components of colonialist domination processes. The arguments are supported in documentary sources, and- crucially- on the versions provided the participants in some of the recounted events.  In this scene, the Shuar people is not seen as a passive actor. Instead, it displays its ability to negotiate with the power-originated messages of domination.

En el artículo analizo el proceso de construcción del Estado y la nación en el suroriente ecuatoriano (actual provincia de Morona Santiago) durante la primera mitad del siglo XX. Este territorio, ocupado originalmente por los pueblos shuar y achuar, permaneció no delimitado entre Ecuador y Perú desde el nacimiento de la República en 1830 hasta 1998. Ante la insipiencia de las instituciones oficiales en la subregión para la época, rastreo al Estado a través de otras entradas metodológicas, fuera de los entes burocráticos y del centro de poder desde el que se supone opera. Argumento que, en este margen de frontera, los misioneros salesianos representan delegados del Estado ecuatoriano, así como de otros poderes locales externos: la Casa de Don Bosco y el Vaticano. Me enfoco en el significado de autoridad que emerge en los campos de los sentidos: los afectos y desafectos, las ilusiones y las emociones, la violencia, la decepción y el miedo, componentes fundantes en los procesos de dominación política colonialista. Los argumentos se sostienen en fuentes documentales y, fundamentalmente, en la memoria narrada por protagonistas de algunos de los hechos que se analizan. En este escenario, el pueblo shuar no aparece como un actor pasivo, sino que muestra sus habilidades de negociación frente al mensaje de dominación que les llega desde el poder. No artigo analiso o processo de construção do Estado e da nação no sudeste do Equador (atual província de Morona Santiago) durante a primeira metade do século XX. Este território, originalmente ocupado pelos povos Shuar e Achuar, permaneceu não delimitado entre o Equador e o Peru desde o nascimento da República em 1830 até 1998. Dada a insipiência das instituições oficiais da sub-região na época, o Estado foi rastreado através de outros insumos metodológicos, fora das entidades burocráticas e do centro de poder a partir do qual deve operar. Defendo que, nesta fronteira, os missionários salesianos representam delegados do Estado equatoriano, bem como de outras potências locais externas: a Casa de Dom Bosco e o Vaticano.
