The object of this analysis is to question both the role of photography as well as the role of the archive the moment “a second ethnographic encounter” –in which descendants of the photographed people see the images– is produced. The article reflects upon the process that leads this type of images to become a part of the “visual archive” category (their history and valorization), and analyzes the way in which they come to acquire a different kind of value when they are removed from the archive and seen by a broader spectrum of people, becoming the catalysts for cultural revalorization processes. |

En este artículo presentamos un estudio sobre un grupo de fotografías atribuidas al antropólogo francés Paul Rivet, realizadas a inicios del siglo XX, en la localidad de Archidona, provincia del Napo, en la región amazónica de Ecuador. Dichas fotografías retratan a personas pertenecientes a la nacionalidad kichwa y reposan hoy en día en la fototeca del Museo Quai Branly en París. El objetivo de este análisis es repensar el rol de la fotografía y del archivo en relación a lo que puede denominarse un “segundo encuentro etnográfico” en el que descendientes de las personas fotografiadas tienen conocimiento de dichas imágenes. Para ello proponemos inicialmente, gracias al estudio de caso presentado, una reflexión sobre el proceso que ha llevado a este tipo de imágenes a conformar la categoría de “archivo visual”, su historia y valorización al interior del archivo. En un segundo momento analizamos cómo estas imágenes pueden adquirir otro valor al “salir del archivo” y darse a conocer, funcionando entonces como catalizadoras de procesos de revalorización cultural.
