| Sumario: | The search for integration among Latin American countries is at a unique point, with economic matters transcended in importance by discussion of the creation of defense policies for the region. In this scenario, with different perceptions regarding what constitutes a threat, two proposals for military integration exist, one lead by Brazil within the context of the Union of South American Nations (Unasur) and the other lead by Venezuela in the context of the Bolivarian Alliance of the Peoples of Our America (Alba). This article presents the foundation of the Venezuelan proposal for the integration of an area of defense, specifically, by the Armed Forces, and provides an analysis of the proposal’s viability.
