El objetivo de este trabajo es reflexionar sobre el uso que hacia 1890-1900 tuvieron las imágenes fotográficas de Guido Boggiani entre los indígenas chamacoco o ishir del Chaco paraguayo, a partir de una lectura actual –en clave hermenéutica– del material historiográfico existente sobre el tema. Para ello recurrimos a la perspectiva interpretativa de Alfred Gell y su lógica agentiva de los hechos sociales, así como a la problematización de Michael Taussig sobre la capacidad mimética de la fotografía; para finalmente discutir la circulación actual de las fotografías de Boggiani en espacios de arte.
