description Together with the discourse of difference, interculturalism has formed part of the political and pedagogical agenda in Ecuador over the past decade. With the intention of deepening the study of the uses and abuses of these discourses in bilingual-intercultural education, we present the results of an ethnographic research project on these issues. The objective of this research was to analyse to what point the recognition of difference and cultural diversity in public education policy is correlated with the actual practices of bilingual intercultural education. We also analyse the consequences these policies have on the situation of poverty and inequality faced by the indigenous population and to what extent these policies allow for the practice and construction of interculturalism.

Junto al discurso de la diferencia, el de la interculturalidad ha pasado a formar parte de la agenda político-pedagógica del Ecuador durante la última década. Con la intención de profundizar el estudio de los usos y abusos de dichos discursos en el ámbito de la educación intercultural bilingüe, se presentan los resultados de una investigación etnográfica cuyo objetivo es analizar hasta qué punto el reconocimiento de la diferencia y la diversidad cultural en las políticas educativas del Estado es correlativo con las prácticas de educación intercultural bilingüe, qué consecuencias tiene sobre la situación de pobreza y desigualdad de la población indígena y en qué medida permite vivir y construir la interculturalidad. Junto com o discurso da diferença, o da interculturalidade passou a formar parte da agenda político-pedagógica equatoriana durante a última década. Com a intenção de aprofundar o estudo dos usos e abusos de tais discursos no campo da educação bilíngue intercultural, são apresentados os resultados de uma pesquisa etnográfica, cujo objetivo é analisar até que ponto o reconhecimento da diferença e da diversidade cultural nas políticas educacionais do Estado estão correlacionadas com as práticas de educação intercultural bilíngue; quais as consequências que ela tem sobre a situação de pobreza e desigualdade da população indígena; e até que ponto permite viver e construir a interculturalidade.
