description This article analyses the recent transformations of the public sphere through an examination of public education in Argentina. These transformations are analysed within the context of the return to democracy and throughout the 1990s, when the Argentinean educational reform was implemented. The result of this transformation gave way to a new definition of the public sphere that attempted to openly dislocate itself from any reference to the State, favouring instead, a direct association with society. While the State was increasingly understood as an “organizational and bureaucratic apparatus”, civil society on the other hand, appeared to be increasingly promoted as an ideal space in which to foster a plurality of views, permitting the proliferation of democratic forces. This space also appeared as a place for intermediary organizations such as the church and the family, and sometimes simply as market field. This dislocation led to the disappearance of the space in which the public sphere connected with the State. In this sense, the space that could previously have been used to build a collective project for a national society ceased to exist.

El artículo analiza las transformaciones recientes en torno a lo público a través del caso de la educación pública en Argentina, en el contexto del retorno a la democracia y en la década de 1990 cuando se instrumentó  la  reforma  educativa.  El  resultado  de  tales  cambios  será  una  nueva  definición  que  intentará desconectarse abiertamente de cualquier referencia a lo estatal y vincularse, más bien, con lo societal. Se impondrá una concepción del Estado como “organización y aparato burocrático” y la sociedad civil aparecerá convocada, a veces, como espacio ideal de la pluralidad de posiciones y despliegue de las fuerzas democráticas; otras, como espacio de organizaciones intermedias como la Iglesia y la familia; finalmente, algunas veces, simple y llanamente como ámbito de mercado. Las consecuencias de tal desconexión permitirán la desaparición de lo público ligado a lo estatal en sentido amplio, es decir, como espacio de inclusión y de construcción de un proyecto colectivo y compartido de sociedad nacional.
