Se sintetiza la evolución de la sociología en esta región desde los años setenta hasta nuestros días. Se argumenta que la etapa fundacional se caracterizó por plantear la institucionalización de la disciplina como un proyecto regional. Este se debilitó pronto y luego se perdió. El reto actual consiste en reinventar dicho proyecto desde el presente.
