These successive cycles have manifested themselves both in the internal configurations and in the regional schemes that have been undertaken. This paper analyzes the construction and evolution of the idea of a region: Latin America and the Caribbean. To that end it examines the concepts of region, regionalism, what Latin America and the Caribbean implies, and what are the transformations in these ideas that have emerged from the regional configurations of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) as plural organisms with broad objectives. |

El espacio denominado América Latina tiene una historia particular marcada por siglos de colonialismo y colonialidad. Este último concepto implica que la estructura básica del sistema colonial no ha variado a pesar de haberse alcanzado una independencia formal. Por esta razón, el subcontinente ha fluctuado entre la dependencia y la búsqueda de autonomía. Estos ciclos sucesivos se han manifestado tanto en las configuraciones internas como en los esquemas regionales en que se ha emprendido. En este documento, se analiza la construcción y evolución de la idea de una región: América Latina y el Caribe. Para ello, se examinan los conceptos de región, regionalismo, qué implica la expresión América Latina y el Caribe, y cuáles son las transformaciones en estas ideas que han surgido a partir de las configuraciones regionales de la Unión de Naciones Suramericanas (UNASUR) y la Comunidad de Estados Latinoamericanos y Caribeños (CELAC) en tanto organismos plurales con amplios objetivos. O espaço denominado América Latina tem uma história particular marcada por séculos de colonialismo e colonialidade. Este último conceito alude que a estrutura básica do sistema colonial não variou apesar de haver alcançado uma independência formal. Por esta razão, o subcontinente flutuou entre a dependência e a busca de autonomia. Estes ciclos sucessivos se manifestaram tanto nas configurações internas quanto nos esquemas regionais empreendidos. Neste documento, se analisa a construção e evolução da ideia de uma região: América Latina e Caribe. Para tanto, são examinados os conceitos de região, regionalismo, que implica a expressão América Latina e o Caribe, e quais são as transformações nestas ideias que surgiram a partir das configurações regionais da União das Nações Sul-Americanas (UNASUL) e a Comunidade dos Estados Latino-Americanos e Caribenhos (CELAC) enquanto organismos plurais com amplos objetivos.
