description | Against left globalism, which argues that the forces of globalization have fundamentally weakened the nation-state, this paper proposes that this sphere continues to be critical both for the imposition of ruling-class interests as well as for the resistance and construction of a popular-democratic alternative. To the extent that the roots of social movement organizations are local, they will be able to focus on environmental and socioeconomic issues that are specific to their localities and will be able to develop democratic participation mechanisms. The practice of the Mexico’s Zapatista National Liberation Army (EZLN) is used to illustrate this popular-democratic political alternative promoted from the bottom up. |
