Sumario: | In this essay I maintain that there has been a process of democratization within the corps of officers of the Peruvian Army. Unlike the other Peruvian military institutions, in the army there is a significant number of cholo officers, that is to say, officers with an Andean and urban migrant background. This has been the consequence of, among other aspects, the andeanization of urban areas in Peru, the inclusive discourse towards common sectors sponsored by the military government of General Juan Velasco (1968-1975), and the events which took place during the internal armed conflict (1980-2000). |
