| description | This article analyzes the issue of violence and the emergence of community self-defense forces in Michoacán, México. The analysis focuses on the emergence of these groups in the Tierra Caliente and the Meseta Purépecha regions. These forces emerged to defend their territories and obtain greater secutiry and justice in a context of insecurity and violence which is the result of the illicit activities of organized crime in the region. We analyze the linkage between structural economic transformation in these regions and the emergence of the new strategies used by organized crime. These changes have altered the equilibriumin in the local order between illegality, the State and community, which has permitted the emergence of community self-defense forces. |

El artículo aborda el tema de la violencia y la emergencia de grupos de defensa comunitaria en Michoacán, México. En el texto se discute el surgimiento de estos grupos en las regiones de Tierra Caliente y en la Meseta Purépecha a partir de la defensa de su territorio y la obtención de seguridad y justicia, en un contexto de inseguridad y violencia producido por las actividades delictivas del crimen organizado en esa entidad. Se analiza la vinculación entre la transformación económica estructural en dichas regiones y la aparición de nuevas formas de operación del crimen organizado, vinculación que alteró el equilibrio en el orden local establecido entre ilegalismo, Estado y comunidad, lo que permitió el surgimiento de la defensa comunitaria. O artigo aborda o tema da violência e a emergência de grupos de defesa comunitária em Michoacán, México. No texto se discute o surgimento destes grupos nas regiões de Tierra Caliente e na Meseta Purépecha a partir da defesa de seu território e a obtenção de segurança e justiça, num contexto de insegurança e violência produzido pelas actividades delitivas do crime organizado nesta entidade. Analisa-se o vínculo entre a transformação econômica estrutural em ditas regiões e o aparecimento de novas formas de operação do crime organizado, vínculo que alterou o equilíbrio na ordem local estabelecido entre ilegalismo, Estado e comunidade, o que permitiu o surgimento da defesa comunitária.
