description This article examines an institution which is central to sustaining racist, classist and patriarchal differentiated citizenship in Bolivia: obligatory military service. Through an analysis of the parliamentary debates that took place throughout 2008, during the first term in office of the governing Movement Towards Socialism (MAS) party, this research reveals the effectiveness of the state legislation mandating obligatory military service in legitimizing and naturalizing processes of domination.

Este artículo explora una institución angular para el sostenimiento en Bolivia de una ciudadanía diferenciadade tintes racistas, clasistas y patriarcales: el servicio militar obligatorio. A través del análisis del debate parlamentario que tuvo lugar en 2008, durante la primera mayoría del Movimiento al Socialismo,esta investigación revela la eficacia de la legislación estatal en la legitimación y naturalización de la dominación. Este artigo explora uma instituição angular para a sustentação em Bolívia de uma cidadania diferenciada, com viés racista, classista e patriarcal: o serviço militar obrigatório. A través da análise do debate parlamentar que teve lugar em 2008 durante a primeira maioria do Movimento ao Socialismo, esta pesquisa revela a eficácia da legislação estatal na legitimação e naturalização da dominação.
