El libro, sin embargo, por su enfoque, desborda el episodio local, aportando sugerentes reflexiones sobre las actitudes políticas del campesinado indígena, la frágil constitución del Estado republicano y el papel que ha jugado el mismo en la construcción de las identidades/alteridades étnicas y locales. La autora quiere demostrar, entre otras cosas, que los campesinos de Huanta no fueron espectadores indiferentes o “carne de cañón” en las numerosas contiendas que siguieron al inicio de la República. Intenta impugnar una historiografía para la cual las poblaciones rurales no tienen una clara percepción de los conflictos nacionales, razón por la cual serían fáciles de manipular.
