Over the past few years a number of voices – both from the political realm and academia – have reintroduced the question of whether Uruguay can “leapfrog development” in the reasonably-short term. e trend of economic wealth and the validation of various wholesome social tendencies in the recent past seem to enrich the opportunity in this question: Can Uruguay eectively sidestep what some authors have called “the middle income trap” and enter a higher stage of development? En los últimos años algunas voces –tanto provenientes del elenco político como de la academia– han comenzado a reincorporar en el Uruguay la interpelación sobre si el país puede dar el “salto al desarrollo” en un plazo razonablemente cercano. La coyuntura de bonanza económica y la confirmación de varias tendencias sociales virtuosas en el pasado reciente parecen abonar la oportunidad de esa interrogante. ¿Puede en efecto el Uruguay sortear lo que algunos autores han llamado “la trampa de los países de ingreso medio” e ingresar a una etapa superior de desarrollo?, ¿cuáles serían las grandes tareas a emprender en esa dirección? En el texto que sigue se proponen algunas pistas de investigación para contribuir a pensar sobre este tema crucial para el Uruguay actual. Nos últimos anos algumas vozes –tanto provenientes do elenco político como da academia– começaram a reincorporar no Uruguai a interpelação sobre se o país pode dar o “salto ao desenvolvimento” em um prazo razoavelmente próximo. A conjuntura de bonança econômica e a conrmação de várias tendências sociais virtuosas em um passado recente parecem abonar a oportunidade dessa interrogante. Pode o Uruguai efetivamente atrair o que alguns autores têm chamado de “a armadilha dos países de renda média” e ingressar em uma etapa superior de desenvolvimento? Quais seriam as grandes tarefas a serem realizadas nesta direção? No texto que segue são propostas algumas pistas de pesquisa para contribuir a pensar sobre este tema crucial para o Uruguai atual.
