El presente artículo busca explicaciones para los derrocamientos de tres presidentes ecuatorianos, que han marcado los puntos culminantes de una década de inestabilidad. Lo hace indagando en el campo de las movilizaciones sociales que precedieron a cada uno de esos hechos, con especial referencia a su composición social y a los objetivos de sus integrantes. En la parte final se proponen algunas hipótesis acerca de la movilización en contra del gobierno de Gutiérrez. Sugiere que no son válidas las explicaciones de racismo y de temor clasista. Enlaza la explicación al surgimiento de reivindicaciones democráticas originadas tanto en los bajos rendimientos del sistema político como en el carácter dictatorial que iba tomando el último gobierno.
