This article aims to understand community building between children and adults and the tensions that arise when they attempt to associate. In-depth interviews and participant observation were conducted to produce information on the experience of participation in a partnership initiative between children and adults promoted by a network of NGOs in Chile. Among the findings were difficulties related to the distribution of responsibilities and the demands of institutional policy. It also highlights the elements that make up community building in the case study and establishes a that contrasts models of participation for community programming.

La participación de niños, niñas y adolescentes es -o debería ser- una preocupación de los Estados que ratificaron la Convención de las Naciones Unidas sobre los Derechos del Niño (CDN). Este artículo tiene por objetivo comprender la construcción de comunidad entre niños y adultos y las tensiones que surgen cuando intentan asociarse. Se realizaron entrevistas en profundidad y observación participante para producir información sobre la experiencia de participación en una iniciativa de asociación entre niños y adultos promovida por una red de ONGs en Chile. Entre los hallazgos se encontraron dificultades relacionadas con la distribución de responsabilidades y las exigencias de la política institucional.
