ABSTRACTThis paper analyzes the characteristics of political control over Atacaman communities that was exercised by the corregidor of Indians. This official, steeped in the popular demonological ideology of his time, believed that he had discovered manifestations of witchcraft. Because they affected him personally, he found them to be subversive. Through the study of this judicial process, welearn about the practices of a significant number of native healers and the conflicts that existed between the most prestigious of these curanderos and the Atacaman ethnic authorities. |
