Las telenovelas representan uno de los géneros propios de América Latina. Su rol es central por los valores e ideas que transmite y por reforzar la identidad de la región. Además, estos contenidos audiovisuales son significativos económicamente por su producción industrial y por la exportación de enlatados y/o formatos. Por lo expuesto, el presente artículo se propone dar cuenta de la evolución histórica de las telenovelas en Argentina desde los orígenes de la televisión en el país en 1951 hasta 2016. Esto permite reconstruir el desarrollo de estos productos culturales desde su fase experimental hasta la producción de piezas específicas para la web.
