Sumario: | We consider mechanisms of direct democracy to be an essential part of modern representative democracies. In this paper we analyse how they are regulated in the Mexican legislation. Compared to other Latin American countries the citizens' initiative and popular consultation were added relatively late, added to the Constitution in 2014. There is, however, much earlier regulation on the state level. We thus analyse the law for the 32 states and registered activation attempts. The Working Paper mainly focuses on the introduction of mechanisms of direct democracy to Mexican law as well as there exceptional use. |
