Essa indústria iniciou suas atividades na Mesoregionno final da década de 1970 e início da década de 1980. Apartir da década de 1990, teve um expressivo crescimentotanto em número de unidades industriais quanto em termos departicipação na geração de emprego e renda, posicionando-seentre os setores industriais com maior importância econômicapara a região.
