description The purpose of this paper is to discuss and analyze the family-school relationship through reflection on the role of homework in the context of the popular classes. The research was carried out in a public school in the outskirts of the city of Campo Grande, in Mato Grosso do Sul. The study was developed in a group of 20 families and the empirical material of the research originated from information from school documents, in the school context and questionnaires, which were operationalized in a Bourdieusian sociological analysis. The information produced and analyzed attest to objective conditions and family dynamics, availability of time and forms of capital, which reflect in the conception of homework for the family and for the student, as an awareness of the value of cultural capital and strategies in the constitution of the student habitus in students of the initial years of Elementary Education. O objetivo deste estudo é discutir e analisar a relação família-escola num contexto de classes populares, por meio da reflexão sobre o papel do dever de casa.  A pesquisa realizou-se numa escola pública de um bairro periférico da cidade de Campo Grande, em Mato Grosso do Sul. O estudo seguiu a metodologia do tipo estudo de caso, o material empírico da pesquisa originou-se de dados do questionário, documentos escolares e observações realizadas no contexto escolar, analisados a partir de perspectiva sociológica bourdieusiana. As condições objetivas e dinâmicas familiares (disponibilização do tempo e formas de capitais) refletiram na concepção do dever de casa para a família e para o aluno, como uma tomada de consciência do valor do capital cultural e de estratégias na constituição do habitus estudantil em alunos dos anos iniciais do ensino fundamental.
