Este artículo explora las fuentes históricas de la leyenda La risa de Demócrito y El llanto de Heráclito, con énfasis en la antigüedad grecorromana y la modernidad renacentista. Después de un estudio genealógico de esta leyenda, se analizan tres obras: las Cartas de los Pseudo-Hipócrates (c. Siglo I d. C.) y los discursos oratorios por Antônio Vieira (Las Lágrimas de Heráclito) y Girolamo Cattaneo (La risa de Demócrito) (1674). Frente a la tiranía de la felicidad que se impone a las sociedades contemporáneas, el rescate de esta construcción cultural milenaria sirve como un lugar (locus) de reflexión sobre la prudencia ética y la condición humana. O artigo explora as fontes históricas da lenda O riso de Demócrito e o pranto de Heráclito, com destaque para a antiguidade grecorromana e para a modernidade renascentista. É realizado um estudo genealógico da referida lenda, seguido da análise de três obras: as Cartas do Pseudo-Hipócrates (c. século I d.C.) e os discursos oratórios de Antônio Vieira (Le lacrime d'Eraclito) e de Girolamo Cattaneo (Il riso di Democrito) (1674).
