Sumario: | The paper explores the historical sources of the legend The Laughter of Democritus and the Weeping of Heraclitus, with emphasis on Greco-Roman antiquity and Renaissance modernity. After a genealogical study of this legend, three works are analyzed: the Pseudo-Hippocratic Letter Correspondence (c. 1st century AD) and the oratory speeches by Antônio Vieira (The Tears of Heraclitus) and by Girolamo Cattaneo (The laughter of Democritus) (1674). Faced with the tyranny of happiness that imposes itself in contemporary societies, the rescue of this millennial cultural construct is used as a locus for reflection on ethical prudence and human condition. |
