Sumario:This article presents an overview about the process of democratization of higher education in Brazil, focusing on the role of distance education (EaD) in this process. The objective is to draw a comparative analysis between the extension to the access to Higher Education Institutions in the face to face modality with distance modality. Based on bibliographical research and analysis of data collected in government agencies, the work brings a reflection that questions whether the simple expansion of vacancies offers a guarantee of democratization to higher education, although this modality represents today an important tool of continuous training for Part of the Brazilian population. The need to think about EaD in Brazil in its restrictions and in its scope with the intention of obtaining full adequacy of its use in the benefit of assistance to a certain population is raised.
