Merquior foi um importante intelectual brasileiro do século XX. Crítico do marxismo, a partir da década de 70, assume uma visão liberal social da filosofia política. Buscava conciliar a liberdade com mais igualdade, propondo um livre mercado com um Estado refuncionalizado que promovesse mais oportunidades. Seu pensamento político influenciou a doutrina de alguns governos pós-redemocratização de 1985. Por meio de uma metodologia de pesquisa documental e uma discussão eminentemente bibliográfica, objetiva-se compreender a visão do liberalismo social de J. G.
