Sumario: | J. G. Merquior was an important Brazilian intellectual of the twentieth century. He was critic of Marxism and, from the 1970s on, he adopts a liberal social view of political philosophy. It sought to reconcile freedom with more equality by proposing a free market with a refunctionalised State that promoted more opportunities. His political thought influenced the doctrine of some post-redemocratization governments of 1985. Through a documentary research methodology and an eminently bibliographical discussion, the objective is to understand J. G. Merquior’s vision of social liberalism for Brazilian politics. |
