The goal of this paper is to accomplish a brief discussion about the relationship between institutional balance and imbalance (or, in other words, stagnation and institutional change) within new institutionalism through the discussion of certain fundamental authors. O estudo da Política passou por inúmeras transformações, saindo aos poucos da Filosofia Política, passando pela Sociologia e, mais recentemente, afirmando-se como um campo de conhecimento autônomo. O foco nas instituições ocupou um papel fundamental nesse processo, e assume posição privilegiada no debate atual da Ciência Política, embora existam várias abordagens e modos de instrumentalizá-las enquanto objetos de estudo.
