Este artigo pretende discutir como Machado de Assis revela em sua literatura algumas sutilizes da sociedade brasileira do final do século XIX. Por meio de sua construção literária, o autor, ao desnudar o comportamento humano, deixa entrever traços característicos de nossa sociedade como a distinção entre “indivíduo” e “pessoas”, o culto da forma e o patrimonialismo presente na vida pública.
