El ensayo trata de la necesidad de diferenciarnos de las tradiciones occidentales de pensamiento que por largo tiempo han delimitado los saberes producidos en América Latina; busca entender que es un movimiento de diferenciación hacia adentro de la herencia occidental y, en ello, que es una apuesta por favorecer una episteme en relación con dicha tradición. Busca reconocer las limitaciones del legado occidental y, por extensión, dar cuenta de sus falsos universales. Al autor le interesa resaltar las escasas posibilidades que tiene la reflexión latinoamericana de comprender las realidades mientras continúe sumergida en el legado de la tradición occidental.
