Under the aegis of this monetary stabilization plan, the banking sector has become more concentrated and highly profitable. |

The complex dynamics of the brazilian banking sector from the second half of the 1990s is demonstrated, as well as the concentration and profitability evolution due to the loss of inflationary revenue, the adoption of restrictive economic measures and liberalization and the proposed restructuring by the monetary authorities in the face of the difficulties and the dynamism of the banks after the implementation of the Real Plan. Under the aegis of this monetary stabilization plan, the banking sector has become more concentrated and highly profitable. O presente artigo discute a importância do Plano Real nas amplas transformações do setor bancário brasileiro no período de 1994 a 2007, sobretudo, no que diz respeito às mudanças na concentração e na rentabilidade deste segmento. Demonstra-se a complexa dinâmica do setor bancário brasileiro a partir da segunda metade da década de 1990, bem como a evolução da concentração e da rentabilidade por efeito da perda da receita inflacionária, da adoção de medidas econômicas restritivas e liberalizantes e das reestruturações propostas pelas autoridades monetárias em face das dificuldades e do dinamismo dos bancos após a implementação do Plano Real.
