O artigo pretendeu comparar duas abordagens que buscaram caracterizar e analisar a evolução da atividade manufatureira de fabricação e conserto de sapatos no período de transição que antecede a criação da grande empresa industrial capitalista. Essa atividade foi objeto de investigação de dois autores, diferentes em termos de filiação metodológica e relativamente distantes em termos cronológicos. De fato, apesar de John R. Commons filiar-se à Economia Institucional e Eric Hobsbawm à historiografia marxista, ambos convergem em aspectos importantes quando investigam a atividade manufatureira de calçados.
