Dans cet article, je rappelle d’abord la liance (au sens que lui donne Marcel BOLLE DE BAL, 2003) entre Alain Leroy Locke et René Maran afin de mieux comprendre le sous-titre: « véridique histoire nègre » du roman maranien. Ensuite, je m’intéresse aux deux traducteurs de Batouala en néerlandais, ma langue maternelle. L’un est un Belge, l’autre un Hollandais, traductions légèrement différentes. Enfin, je m’intéresse à un classique que Maran me semble avoir bien lu, et qui se situe au « coeur de l’Afrique », Joseph Conrad. Ce récit permet encore d’illuminer un dernier nom qui gravite autour de Maran: André Gide. Maran connaissait ce dernier par ses relations au sein de La Nouvelle Revue Française. Gide comme Maran font écho à Heart of Darkness, la nouvelle conradienne se déroulant au Congo belge. Tant dans le Voyage au Congo que Batouala, l’autre Congo figure en creux dans la « relation » (au sens de reportage) d’André Gide et des romans coloniaux de George Simenon. En effet, ce dernier situe plusieurs de ses romans dans les Congos (belge et français).
